1850 Double Eagle, Choice AU
Partial Luster Remains
1850 $20 AU55 PCGS Secure. Bright yellow-gold coloration on
this Choice AU 1850 double eagle is original. The devices are
sharply detailed, and each side shows moderate surface chatter
consistent with the grade. Hints of soft mint luster remain in the
fields. Collectors interested in federal coins struck with gold
mined during the California Gold Rush should not overlook the early
Philadelphia double eagles. Prior to the opening of the San
Francisco branch mint in 1854, large amounts of California gold
were shipped to New Orleans and Philadelphia for coinage. The
double eagle denomination was the recipient of most of this
