1850 Double Eagle, Choice AU
Partial Luster Remains

1850 $20 AU55 PCGS Secure. Bright yellow-gold coloration on this Choice AU 1850 double eagle is original. The devices are sharply detailed, and each side shows moderate surface chatter consistent with the grade. Hints of soft mint luster remain in the fields. Collectors interested in federal coins struck with gold mined during the California Gold Rush should not overlook the early Philadelphia double eagles. Prior to the opening of the San Francisco branch mint in 1854, large amounts of California gold were shipped to New Orleans and Philadelphia for coinage. The double eagle denomination was the recipient of most of this gold.(Registry values: N1793)
