Description

1882 Three Dollar Gold, MS65
Very Rare in Finer Grades

1882 $3 MS65 PCGS. CAC. The 1882 three dollar gold piece claims a business-strike mintage of 1,500 pieces, certainly a small total in absolute terms, but not out-of-the-ordinary in the context of the series. Fortunately, the 1882 has a relatively high survival rate, probably because contemporary collectors realized the low production total would make the coins more desirable in the future and went to the trouble of saving high-quality pieces in Mint State condition. The issue is still very rare at the MS65 level, however. This delightful Gem exhibits well-detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster throughout, with well-preserved yellow-gold surfaces that show a few areas of prooflike reflectivity. Population: 7 in 65, 5 finer. CAC: 1 in 65, 2 finer (3/17).(Registry values: N7079)
