Description

Important, Originally Toned MS66 1892-S Dollar

1892-S $1 MS66 PCGS. Formerly offered as lot 8813 in our 1996 ANA Sale, where it was described as, "A pristine, wholly original specimen, tinted a light rose-gray overall and exhibiting deeper autumn-gold and bluish-green hues in the more protected areas. Underneath, the surfaces shimmer with cartwheel luster and have remarkably escaped coin-to-coin contact. One of the "big five" among Morgan dollar rarities, the '92-S epitomizes a conditionally elusive issue. More than a million pieces were originally struck, but those that escaped melting in most cases saw extensive circulation. Today, examples grading Good to VF can be located without difficulty and at little cost. Above those levels, the obtainability and affordability of this issue jumps in quantum leaps, ranging from fairly scarce in XF, quite scarce in AU, and altogether rare at all levels of mint state. The presently offered example is superb in every respect and is one of the rarest of the rare among Morgan dollars." Population: 4 in 66, 6 finer (1/02).
