   Description
1850 Gold Dollar, MS67
Elusive Early Philadelphia Issue
The Second Finest Known

 1850 G$1 MS67 PCGS Secure. CAC. Ex: Duckor/Akers. Diagonal
die polishing lines on the obverse impart a satiny appearance that
is extraordinarily attractive. This Superb Gem offers rich yellow
luster. A tiny grease spot near the lowest outer leaf on the left
will identify this example.Variety and Die State: Breen-6011. The obverse die is perfect, while the reverse shows delicate peripheral die cracks.
Population (6/15): Two MS67 coins are the finest at PCGS. NGC and PCGS combined have certified fewer than 40 examples in MS65 or finer grades. One NGC coin is an MS68, and the second finest is MS66.
Commentary: Gold mintages increased dramatically following the start of the Gold Rush in 1849. However, that increase occurred in 1851 for the Philadelphia Mint gold dollars, and only 481,953 examples were struck in 1850. The population data reveal the high-grade rarity of this issue.
Douglas Winter Commentary: The 1850 is by a large margin the rarest P-mint Type One gold dollar. It is only moderately scarce in MS63 and MS64, but Gems are scarce and Superb Gems are far more difficult to find than the 1851-1853 dates. There are two really great pieces known:
1. Private collection, ex: Heritage 1/2013: 5775 ($55,813; as MS68 NGC), Bowers and Merena 8/2010: 1430 ($54,625; as MS67 PCGS), Bowers and Ruddy 10/1982: 6 ($11,000), Eliasberg Collection. Now graded MS67+ by PCGS and easily identifiable by a small spot on Liberty's hair.
2. Duckor Collection, obtained from David Akers and in his personal collection for many years; earlier pedigree unknown. Graded MS67 by PCGS. The pedigree for this coin as listed in PCGS CoinFacts is incorrect.
The Duckor coin is very close to the famous Eliasberg Superb Gem in terms of quality and appearance. Probably the only thing that separates the two is the former's slightly richer coloration.
Provenance: Purchased from David Akers, who obtained the coin circa 1975.
