Description
1851-O Gold Dollar, MS65
Thin Stars Variant
Seldom Offered in Finer Grades
1851-O G$1 MS65 PCGS. CAC. Variety 1. Slight central
weakness is evident on the hair curls over Liberty's ear, and at
the LA of DOLLAR and the 5 of the date. All other design elements
are boldly rendered. Both sides of this Gem are highly lustrous
with brilliant lemon-yellow surfaces. Wisps of pale blue enhance
the eye appeal.Variety and Die State: Breen-6018, Winter-1. Thin stars appear from 12 to 2 o'clock. Peripheral flowlines are evident on both sides, and delicate peripheral die cracks have formed on the reverse. Winter describes the flowlines as "inner rings of roughness." No repunching or other die anomalies are noted.
Population (6/15): PCGS reports 27 of these in MS65, three in MS65+, and three in MS66. NGC shows 23 in MS65 and one each in MS65+ and MS66. This MS65 coin is one of only six with the CAC approval.
Commentary: We have offered one finer coin in 22 years of our Permanent Auction Archives. In 2005, we mentioned that MS66 PCGS coin as the first of the grade that we had handled. During the last decade, we have not handled another example at that grade level. Gems appear in our auctions about once a year, on average.
Douglas Winter Commentary: After a hoard of a few dozen high-grade 1851-O gold dollars was found in 2004 by a Pennsylvania dealer, this issue became far more available in high grades than it was previously. Today, it is the most available gold dollar from the New Orleans Mint in MS65, although the current PCGS population appears to be swollen by resubmissions. PCGS has now graded three in MS66, and I believe that at least two of those were formerly in MS65 holders.
This piece has the typical luster and color of an 1851-O from the above-referenced hoard, but it is clearly nicer than average. In fact, were it not for a few ticks in the left obverse field, it would likely be in an MS66 holder.
Steve obtained this coin from Pinnacle Rarities via private treaty in 2013, and I believe it is an excellent type representative of a Gem New Orleans gold dollar.
Provenance: Purchased from Pinnacle Rarities.
