Description

1869-S Eagle, MS61
Tied for the Finest Certified

1869-S $10 MS61 NGC. As the San Francisco Mint concentrated on double eagle production throughout the 1860s and 1870s, the mintages of smaller denomination gold coins remained at extremely small levels, and that was especially true of eagles. That facility coined just 6,430 such coins in 1869, and the few survive typically grade VF and XF. Examples that grade AU are rare, and Mint State pieces are extremely rare. The present piece is the only NGC-certified Mint State 1869-S eagle, while PCGS has graded one in MS60 and another in MS61 (1/18). An impressive orange-gold eagle, this piece has only microscopic marks on its satiny surfaces with full mint brilliance and sharp design motifs.
