Description

'1850' Baldwin & Co. Ten Dollar, MS64
Kagin-1d, Nagy Brass 'Restrike'
Distinctive Horseman Motif

"1850" 'Restrike' Baldwin & Co. Ten Dollar, Brass, MS64 NGC. K-1d, R.6. The "Horseman" Baldwin ten dollar "restrikes" were made from copy dies in various metals by Stephen K. Nagy in 1909. They are a collectible alternative to the rare and desirable but costly originals. In previous auctions, we have offered gilt, silver, and white metal examples, but this is the first Heritage appearance in brass. The issue should not be confused with the "1857/0" replicas struck in 2002 from melted-down S.S. Central America ingots. An early die state without breaks on the lower right reverse border. Die rust is nonetheless present across smooth, sharply struck, and semiprooflike deep olive-brown surfaces.
