Description

1855 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar
Kagin-6, VF30
Ex: Eliasberg Collection

1855 $10 Wass Molitor Ten Dollar VF30 PCGS. K-6, High R.5. Ex: Eliasberg. An original dusky apricot-gold example of this rare Wass Molitor variety, made at a time when the San Francisco Mint was open but lacked parting acids to produce sufficient double eagles to meet the demands of the Gold Rush economy. This coin shows softness of strike on TEN D and GOLD, and the left field has a couple of thin marks, but otherwise it is well-defined and pleasing for the VF30 level. Sold uncertified as XF40 in its 1996 Eliasberg auction appearance, where it was pedigreed (per Walter Breen) to the "Lusk and Clapp collections." That would imply that the present coin appeared as lot 659 in the B. Max Mehl December 1930 auction of the Frank S. Lusk Collection, then to J.M. Clapp and Eliasberg. But Mehl's description does not match this example; he states it has a "light scratch [on the] back of [the] head" not apparent here. Listed on page 405 of the 2019 Guide Book.
Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 5/1996), lot 361; Chicago ANA (Stack's Bowers, 8/2011), lot 7558, which realized $19,550.
