Description

1881-O Ten Dollar, MS60
Low-Mintage New Orleans Issue
Extremely Rare in Mint State

1881-O $10 MS60 NGC. CAC. Variety 1. The 1881-O is the rarest New Orleans Mint eagle from the early part of this decade. Coins graded AU55 to AU58 are very rare, and there are only a handful of Mint State examples known. In 2006, Winter reported probably four of five Uncirculated pieces extant, a number that likely remains fairly accurate despite inflated certification totals.

This is a well-struck representative with full radial lines on the stars, sharp hair details, and bold feather definition. Each side displays considerable mint frost on the devices with a hint of light reddish-gold color. A choice piece for the grade with satiny surfaces notably free of major marks. Census: 8 in 60, 6 finer. CAC: 3 in 60, 1 finer (1/18).
