Description

1831 Quarter Dollar, AU50
B-2, Flip-Over Double Struck

1831 25C B-2, R.2, Small Letters -- Flip-Over Double Struck -- AU50 NGC. Tompkins Die State 2/2. An apparently unique Mint error within the Capped Bust series. This remarkable coin was undoubtedly one of John McCloskey's favorites. While the initial strike was eliminated to a large extent by a strong second strike, the flip-over double strike is clearly visible under magnification. Remnants of the initial strike include shield lines across Liberty's cheek, and other anomalies in the obverse fields. The reverse shows the bold outline of Liberty's lower curls between the eagle's beak and wing shoulder, and Liberty's profile ghosted in the open reverse fields. The coin is struck from lapped dies that characterize a middle die state, with original grayish-blue toning and solid About Uncirculated definition. This exact coin is discussed in Early United States Quarters by Steve M. Tompkins on pages 234 and 342, and plated in Early Quarter Dollars of the United States 1796-1838 by Rory Rea, Dr. Glenn Peterson, Bradley S. Karoleff and John J. Kovach, Jr. on page 358.
