Description

1860-O Double Eagle, AU50
Low-Mintage New Orleans Rarity

1860-O $20 AU50 PCGS. Variety 2. The New Orleans Mint struck only 6,600 double eagles in 1860, and this issue earns a spot as one of the rarest O-mint dates in the series in high grade. About Uncirculated coins are the finest examples that most collectors will ever see, and there are strong advances in value between the minutely different AU numeric levels. Even the low-end AU50 coins have approached the $50,000 price level in recent auctions, while coins in AU53 have easily surpassed that barrier. Only two Mint State pieces are known, both graded by NGC; the finer of these, an MS61 coin, garnered more than $152,000 in lot 4192 of our recent ANA Signature (Heritage, 8/2017). The present piece adds to the the medley of high-end New Orleans gold rarities that have traded hands in recent years.

Original straw-gold color complements bold central detail, while semiprooflike fields are lightly marked, as expected for the grade. Glimmering reflectivity shows when tilted beneath a light. No singularly heavy abrasions are seen. Population: 9 in 50, 22 finer (2/18).(Registry values: N4719)
