Description

1906-S Five Dollar, MS67
Ex: Eliasberg, Green Label Holder

1906-S $5 MS67 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. In its Eliasberg catalog appearance, this coin was described as "one of the finest known pieces," purchased by J.M. Clapp "from the United States Mint, March 1906, at face value." The coin matches the photo in the Eliasberg catalog, since both show four tiny toning spots on the chin and near star 3. It does not appear that the coin has appeared at auction since, until now. Thoroughly lustrous and virtually immaculate with exquisitely blended lime-green and peach-gold toning. The stars show minor incompleteness of strike. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 1 in 67, 1 finer. CAC: 1 in 67, 1 finer (11/19).
Ex: J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate, 1942, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg Estate; United States Gold Coin Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1982), lot 614.
