Description

1857-S Liberty Twenty, MS64
With a Pinch of California Gold Dust
Ex:
S.S. Central America

1857-S $20 Spiked Shield, Variety 20A, S.S. Central America With Pinch, MS64 PCGS. CAC. This Choice Mint State 1857-S double eagle that was recovered from the S.S. Central America treasure is housed in a specially designed double-window PCGS holder and has "one pinch" of gold dust. A pinch of gold dust in the early 1850s was worth about a dollar. Today, a pinch of gold (1.5 grams) is worth more than $170. The project's chief scientist, Bob Evans, who signed the encapsulated COA, certifies that the coin and gold dust were recovered as part of the treasure. The Choice Uncirculated 1857-S double eagle in this holder is frosty and highly lustrous, with only a few tiny marks that dictate the assigned grade. As expected, the strike is needle-sharp.

Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 670713, Base PCGS# 670830)
