1857-S Double Eagle, MS65
S.S. Central America With Pinch, 20A

1857-S $20 Spiked Shield, Variety 20A, S.S. Central America With Pinch, MS65 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. Bob Evans Signature. Variety 20A Spiked Shield, which is displayed in the lower left (facing) shield as a spike in a diagonally upward direction. This splendid example has rich yellow-gold toning with orange highlights for a very attractive appearance. Fully struck with excellent detail, along with thick, frosty luster radiating over the surfaces. Only a few small marks on well preserved surfaces. A wonderful San Francisco branch mint No Motto double eagle in Gem Uncirculated with an interesting story to tell, as it was part of the 2014 recovery efforts to bring up more coins and bars from the so-called Ship of Gold, which sank one hundred miles off the coast of the Carolinas in September of 1857.
