Description
Group lot of two sharp counterstamps -- each on a Seated quarter. 1853 Arrows & Rays Seated Quarter A. WARD / N-Y., VG Host; XF Counterstamp. Brunk W-158, Rulau NY 2692. Curved prepared punch. Four examples known. Rulau reports three examples on Seated quarters plus a single large cent with the same counterstamp. Ex: Van Ormer Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/1985), lot 2901; 1854 Seated Quarter, G.W. COLLINS / URBANA. O., VF Host; XF Counterstamp. Brunk C-736, Rulau Ohio 180. Two-line prepared punch. Just two confirmed examples of the full mark. The Rulau and Brunk plate coin. This fine daguerreian mark is clearly that of George W. Collins, the Urbana, Ohio "artist" who was principal of his Ambrotype & Photograph Gallery in that city. He was also a wholesale photographic goods and materials merchant. Ex: Van Ormer Collection (Bowers and Merena, 9/1985), lot 2599.Auction Info
