Description

1901 Liberty Twenty, MS65
Sharply Struck
Among Finest of the Issue

1901 $20 MS65 PCGS. The 1901 double eagle produced a meager 111,430 pieces, yet today is plentiful in high-end grades up to the Gem level. While various hoards from Europe have boosted totals beginning in the 1990s, examples in MS66 remain elusive, with PCGS showing only four and NGC just one (6/25). This remarkable Gem displays beautiful autumn-gold surfaces with subtle undertones of olive and traces of lilac and orange in the protected spaces. A bold strike shows razor-sharp details on design emblems covered in softly frosted luster. A few minor marks on Liberty's cheek are seen under a loupe, otherwise light abrasions are typical of the issue and are not bothersome. Free of mint-made copper spots that frequent this issue, eye appeal is exceptional.(Registry values: N2998)
