1847-O $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Variety 4. The 1 in the date is repunched and in the dentils; top of fraction bar on the reverse aligns to the right side of the mintmark. In 1847 the New Orleans Mint was less than a decade old, at least in terms of coinage manufacture -- construction began in 1835 and was completed in 1839 -- and the facility set numerous records in the year. The eagle coinage for 1847 was the single largest O-mint production, coming in at 571,000 pieces, and even today examples are readily available through the AU level.
The quarter eagle mintage was also generous, at 124,000 pieces, and this piece demonstrates that some of the dies were stretched to near their limits to accomplish such a large production. The reverse shows numerous die cracks; remember that coinage dies were the bailiwick of the Philadelphia Mint. The 1847-O also has a reputation as among the most poorly struck New Orleans gold coins. This coin shows softly defined centers, but the surfaces are lustrous throughout, and the swirling fields radiate yellow-gold warmth. Few marks of any depth or severity appear, making this example among the few finest certified. PCGS has certified the present piece in MS63 and one MS64 finer; NGC has certified two submissions in MS63, two in MS64, and one in MS65 (8/11).
