Description

Choice AU 1856-D Gold Dollar
First D-Mint Type Three Issue

1856-D G$1 AU55 PCGS. Variety 8-K. Of course, only one die pairing was required to strike the minuscule production of 1,460 coins for the 1856-D gold dollar, and it is popular as the first Type Three series issue from Dahlonega. Traces of mint luster remain on this Choice AU example, and the surfaces are equally noteworthy for the intermingled reddish-gold and lilac colors blending throughout each side in an appealing array. A couple of minor surface marks appear but are undistracting, and the strike is somewhat soft in the centers, typical for the issue. Heavy die striations occur on the reverse. Population: 10 in 55, 19 finer (10/12).(Registry values: N4719)
