Description

1802/'1' Quarter Eagle, BD-1, MS61
Distinguished Eliasberg Provenance

1802/'1' $2 1/2 BD-1, R.4, MS61 PCGS. CAC. Ex: Eliasberg. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. A minuscule mintage of 3,035 quarter eagles were delivered in 1802. Both Harry Bass and John Dannreuther questioned the validity of the overdate attribution for the year 1802, and their excellent reference book called the date 1802 instead of the traditional 1802/1. The Draped Bust quarter eagles shared some reverses with dimes, with the two and a half dollar reverses always used first. The 1802/1 BD-1 reverse was later used on 1802 JR-3, and finally on 1803 JR-2, where it shattered in terminal state.

Golden-orange patina covers this wonderful coin, once in collection of eminent numismatist Louis Eliasberg Sr. A few small marks are minimal for the MS61 grade. The strike is soft in the centers, typical for the variety and date. Vibrant luster adds charm, and certainly contributed to the CAC approval. A great design by Chief Engraver Robert Scot combined with an impeccable provenance will ignite spirited bidding.
Ex: Charles T. Steigervoalt (1893); John H. Clapp; Clapp estate, to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr (1942); Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Ruddy, 10/1982), lot 83.
