Description

1851-C Quarter Eagle, MS62
Rarely Available in Uncirculated

1851-C $2 1/2 MS62 PCGS Secure. Variety 1. Ex: Dingler. Somewhat cloudy with orange-gold color turning to a vivid purple hue over the high spots of the obverse and the reverse. There are some light old hairlines in the left obverse field; the reverse is choice and shows very strong detail for this issue. This piece was at one time graded MS61 by PCGS but it appears to have been upgraded to MS62 since the publication of the third edition of Doug Winter's book on Charlotte gold which was released in mid-2008.
There are probably no more than a half dozen examples of the 1851-C quarter eagle known in Uncirculated and most of these have been off the market over the past decade. The finest is the Bass II coin, lot 445, now graded MS63 by PCGS.
Ex: James A. Stack Auction (Stack's, 10/1994), lot 905; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2009), lot 2512, where it brought $13,800.
