Description

1917-D Reverse Mintmark Half, MS65
Thick Mint Luster

1917-D 50C Reverse MS65 NGC. Mintages seldom tell the whole story of a date's rarity, and the difference between the Obverse Mintmark and Reverse Mintmark 1917-D Walking Liberty halves is a case in point. The Reverse Mintmark has a mintage approaching 2 million pieces, while the Obverse Mintmark type just tops three-quarters of a million coins. Unsurprisingly, the Reverse Mintmark is more common in low circulated grades, but by the XF level, the Reverse Mintmark is costlier, and at the Gem level it is a condition rarity. While this example is a trifle soft on Liberty's head, the branch hand is better-defined than usually seen, and subtly textured silver surfaces are minimally marked with a hint of antique-gold color.
