Description

1857-O Liberty Twenty, AU55
Overlooked Branch Mint Issue

1857-O $20 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. Although the 1857-O Liberty double eagle claims a small mintage of 30,000 pieces, its elusive nature is often overlooked because of its proximity to the 1854 and 1856 New Orleans issues, two of the greatest rarities of the series. Despite the recovery of a few Mint State coins from the wreck of the S.S. Republic, the 1857-O remains a scarce issue, especially in high grade. This attractive Choice AU specimen exhibits well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of wear on the high points. The lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces show traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas around the devices. The overall presentation is most attractive. Census: 36 in 55, 30 finer (4/16).(Registry values: N2998)
