Description

1916-S Ten Dollar, MS65
Seldom Offered This Fine

1916-S $10 MS65 NGC. Gold eagle coinage at Philadelphia was suspended between 1915 and 1926, but the San Francisco Mint struck coins in both 1916 and 1920. The 1920-S is a famous rarity in the series today, while the 1916-S is much more accessible but also a condition rarity in its own right. The typical 1916-S grades in the MS61 to MS63 range. Examples are scarce in MS64, and at the Gem level they are rare. This glistening MS65 piece displays a bold strike that becomes weak only on the uppermost obverse stars. Luminous sun-gold and rose-orange hues adorn each side, while just a few small marks prevent an even finer grade. Eye appeal is outstanding for the MS65 level. Census: 7 in 65, 1 finer (12/25).(Registry values: N4719)
