Description

1863 Gold Dollar, MS64
Scarce, Low-Mintage Date

1863 G$1 MS64 PCGS. Only 6,200 gold dollars were struck in 1863 during the height of the Civil War. The coins are quite rare, with the estimated number of survivors standing at 100 to 140 pieces. Although 300 fewer coins were minted in 1864, the number of 1863 survivors is lower and they are scarcer. Lovely canary-gold color provides this Select example with a pleasing appearance. The strike details are remarkably strong throughout, and the coin was struck from slightly rotated dies. A couple of shallow scuffs in the left obverse field prevent an even higher grade. Population: 5 in 64, 7 finer (8/14).(Registry values: N4719)

Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25CX, PCGS# 7562, Greysheet# 8025)

Weight: 1.67 grams

Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
