Description
Superb 1880-CC Morgan Silver Dollar, MS67
1880-CC $1 MS67 PCGS. Mintage of silver dollars was limited at the Carson City Mint in 1880 because of an uncertain supply of silver. Many local miners preferred to ship their ore to San Francisco in the early years of the Mint. Coinage was suspended from November 1, 1879 to May 1, 1880 because of these difficulties. When coinage was resumed, only 591,000 silver dollars were produced before year's end. This small mintage was further reduced in 1881, when the Assay Commission determined many of the CC dollars were of insufficient fineness. The findings of the Assay Commission resulted in the melting of 96,000 dollars being stored in the Mint vaults. A net mintage of only 495,000 coins was eventually deemed fit for use. This offering features a beautiful specimen of this better-date coin. Sparkling cartwheel luster radiates from the pristine surfaces. The devices are frosty, with die polish showing in small patches on Liberty's hair and cap. The high technical grade of this coin is matched by its tremendous eye appeal. This coin is worthy of a place in the most advanced collection. Population: 23 in 67, 0 finer (11/08).
