Description

1850-C Quarter Eagle, Variety 2, MS61
Scarce, Impressive High-Grade Example

1850-C $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Variety 2. Two reverse dies were employed in the production of this Charlotte Mint quarter eagle issue. The mintmark on this variety is nearly centered above the diagonal fraction bar of 1/2, and it is very scarce compared to its Variety 1 counterpart. Although the 1850-C is generally regarded as the second most common C-mint quarter eagle from the 1850s, the issue becomes increasingly scarce in the higher circulated grades and only a handful of Mint State pieces are known. The peripheral details of this uncommonly high grade example are strongly struck while the interior devices have characteristic weakness, particularly the eagle's feathers and talons, rather surprising since the reverse die used here was only activated for a portion of the '50-C production and was its first and only usage. The green-gold surfaces are typically abraded and bathed in a delicate reddish patina. Census: 11 in 61, 3 finer (8/14).
