Description

1898 Double Eagle, MS64+
Tied Finest at Either Service

1898 $20 MS64+ PCGS. Glistening orange-gold surfaces exhibit tantalizing mint luster. Strike is superbly executed, with only a hint of weakness on the uppermost strands of Liberty's hair. A thorough inspection turns up minimal troublesome abrasions, as is expected at the MS64+ level, but not expected for this issue. Its relatively low mintage of 170,300 is around one-tenth that of 1895 and 1897, and less than one-quarter that of 1896, providing fewer shots on goal for high-grade survivors. Additionally, the volume of repatriated examples is lower than for previous years. Given the low volume of choice coins that result from such hoards, the probability of high grade survivors exponentially decreases yet again, and the stage is set for a serious conditional rarity. Sure enough, this issue is unknown in Gem, with the present offering and two other certifications in MS64+ PCGS representing the finest known representatives from this tough issue.(Registry values: N4719)
