Description

1909-D Double Eagle, MS64
Rarest Denver Issue in the Series

1909-D $20 MS64 PCGS. Beautiful yellow-gold surfaces deepen slightly towards the peripheries, for a beautiful and intense appearance. Luster is strong and strike only Liberty's face and the eagle's breast feathers lack full definition. The 1909-D has the third lowest mintage in the series at 52,500, after only the 1908-S (22,000) and 1913-S (34,000), and is the rarest Denver Mint issue. The Mint State supply was supplemented with hoards from Switzerland, France, and El Salvador that returned to the United States beginning in the 1960s. However, in the grand scheme of Saint-Gaudens double eagle repatriations, these were limited. Most likely remained stateside and were melted in the 1930s, as the certified population is just shy of 1,400 -- a number inflated, as always, by resubmissions.(Registry values: N4719)
