Description

1858 Half Dime, Pastel-Toned PR67
Ex: Floyd Starr

1858 H10C PR67 NGC. V-8. This is an old friend come back for another visit, the former Floyd T. Starr 1858 half dime which we offered in our Central States Signature some seven years ago, where this remarkable coin realized $12,650. Pastel lilac and mauve hues accompany pale aqua on the obverse, the reverse displaying orange hues. The strike is somewhat soft in keeping with the Breen Proof Encyclopedia description for these dies: "Date rather low and slanting down; 8's have a rather soft, indefinite appearance, as does lower part of the 5. Shield point above serif of 1, slightly r. of tip; skirt pendant over r. tip of 5; left base of 1 above left edge of denticle. Rev.: Die file mark between IC. Lettering is comparatively light." Minor central softness also appears on the reverse at IM of DIME. This lovely Superb Gem proof is free of mentionable contact and numerically tied for the finest certified. Census: 2 in 67 (1 in 67 ), 0 finer (12/13).
Ex: Floyd Starr Collection (Stack's, 10/1992), lot 616; Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2007), lot 2058, as "ex: Starr," PR67. Now reholdered in a new NGC encapsulation.
