Popular 'Earring' Variety

1851-C $5 XF45 NGC. Variety 1. The "Earring" variety, named after the round depression centered on Liberty's earlobe. The cause is similar to the "Shield Ring" varieties seen on Seated halves and Liberty eagles of the era, in each case seen at the exact center of the die. The 1851-C is a scarce issue with a mintage of less than 50,000 pieces. The present example displays rose-tinged luster in protected regions. Open areas are yellow-gold. Moderate marks are noted near star 4, and thin lines cross both wings.(Registry values: P4)
