1852-C Gold Dollar, MS64
Condition Census Quality
1852-C G$1 MS64 NGC. Variety 2. The 18 in the date is
lightly repunched south, and clash marks are noted near the coronet
tip and the left wreath stem. The strike is well-impressed for a
Southern branch mint product, particularly on the curls near
Liberty's ear. As seen on many gold dollars, the peripheries
display cartwheel luster, while the open fields are moderately
prooflike. There are three small patches of roughness on the
obverse as made; this is not uncommon on this issue, which is known
for poor die preparation. On the reverse, there is a shallow die
defect from the right side of the 1 in the denomination down to the
right side of the second L and the left side of the A in DOLLAR.
This is found on about half of all known 1852-C dollars. Despite
this defect, the date is still full and the strike is sharper than
seen on many examples. Although the Charlotte Mint struck 72,574
half eagles in 1852, their emission of gold dollars was
substantially smaller. A mere 9,434 pieces were struck, and of that
amount probably only 80-85 pieces are extant today in all grades.
This is a nice looking coin that qualifies as a lower-end Condition
Census example.Around two to three dozen Uncirculated 1852-C dollars are known. This is the second most available Charlotte gold dollar in high grades, but it is still many times scarcer than the 1851-C.
