1852 Gold Dollar in Copper
Judd-147, PR66 Red and Brown

1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-147, Pollock-175, Low R.7 PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Ex: Simpson. An annular pattern with a large central perforation, which would have allowed a larger-diameter gold dollar. The annular format limits the devices to a wreath and scrollwork. Gold dollars were vital to commerce in 1852, since silver coins were worth more than face value and did not circulate. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Possibly as many as a dozen of these patterns are known today. Light brown, pale blue, and violet toning accompanies the generous quota of mint red that remains on each side of this pleasing proof. Population: 5 in PR66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (12/23).
