1881-CC Half Eagle, AU58
Variety 1-A, the Only Dies
Condition Census Specimen
1881-CC $5 AU58 PCGS. Variety 1-A. The only known die pair
for a mintage of 13,886 coins. Perhaps as many as 100 of those
coins survive in all grades with an average certified grade of just
40. The present near-Mint specimen is far finer than usual, with a
combined PCGS and NGC population of only 11 coins and just nine
finer submissions, representing only four or five different
specimens. This attractive example of the conditionally rare 1881-CC half eagle has nearly full orange-gold luster with only a trace of high-point wear. A small mark at the base of Liberty's neck will identify the provenance. An important opportunity for the advanced Liberty half eagle collector or Carson City specialist. Population: 5 in 58, 3 finer (3/12).(Registry values: P3)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25XE, PCGS# 8356, Greysheet# 9073)
