1794 S-30 Head of 1794 Cent, AU55
Tied for Seventh Finest Known
1794 1C Head of 1794, S-30, B-12, R.1, AU50 Bland; AU55 PCGS
Secure. The smooth, semi-gloss light brown surfaces display
soft golden undertones. The design elements are well defined and
centered on the planchet, and most of the dentilation shows and is
relatively strong. The only noteworthy mark is a shallow scrape in
the lower-right obverse field. Nice overall eye appeal for an early
large cent with the designated grade.Variety Equivalents: Maris 26, Frossard 16.1, Doughty 46, Hays 37, Chapman 22.
Obverse 11: Vertical Field Chips. This is the first appearance of the Marred Field obverse. A small curved die chip is always present behind the fourth and fifth curls, and that die chip enlarges during production of the variety. The lowest hair curl is doubled, a clearly visible diagnostic. This obverse is found on S-30 and S-31, and after alteration on S-38, S-39, S-40, and NC-2.
Reverse H: Extended Right Ribbon. The right ribbon ends in a long, nearly horizontal tail that nearly touches the border. That single feature is unmistakable and diagnostic. This reverse is found on S-29 and S-30.
Die State IV: A single small field chip appears in this late die state S-30 cent. Heavy clash marks are noted on both sides with heavy die rust on the reverse that should not be confused with porosity. The rusted reverse appearance is distinctive.
Rarity and Census: Although a common variety, high grade pieces are elusive. As an AU50, Del Bland records this tied for seventh finest known in his Condition Census behind two graded MS60 and four others graded AU55. One of the 55 coins is in the ANS Collection, and another hasn't been seen for six decades since it appeared in a 1957 James Kelly sale. Could the Boka specimen be the Kelly coin?
Commentary: There are two different Marred Field obverses, the first appearing on S-30 and S-31, and the second appearing on S-38, S-39, S-40, and NC-2. Actually, they are both from a single physical piece of die steel, but that die has been so drastically changed between the two groups of varieties that the field chips are the common identifying feature.
Boka Commentary: This beauty has been an enigma to me: A coin this lovely must have had a prominent pedigree for the more than 200 years since it was struck but the lineage remains unknown.
Biography: On July 6, 1769, Martin Summers and Anna Barbara Geiss were married at St. Michael's and Zion Church in Philadelphia. Martin was born in Germany about 1740, and Barbara was born about 1750. During the Revolutionary War, Martin served as a private in Colonel William Bradford's First Regiment of Foot Soldiers. Prior to the War, the couple had three children: Philip was born about 1770, Henry about 1771, and Elizabeth about 1774. Following the War, Martin returned to Philadelphia where he was eventually hired as a doorkeeper at the Philadelphia Mint, a position he retained from 1795 until his death in March 1804. It is believed that his wife is the Barbara Summers that entered the Mint service on July 2, 1798, according to Frank Stewart's history. Philip assumed his late father's position as doorkeeper in 1804. The couple's daughter, Elizabeth, married Lodewick Sharpe who was a clerk to the Chief Coiner, Henry Voigt.
