Description

1842 Small Date, Reverse of 1842 Half
Finest Certified at PCGS, MS65+

1842 50C Small Date, Large Letters, WB-101, MS65+ PCGS. The 1842 Small Date half dollar is significantly scarcer than its Medium Date counterpart, and is genuinely rare in Mint State. This example is one of only two Gems certified by PCGS and is the only one awarded a Plus designation, with none numerically finer; NGC has seen four MS65 coins, also with one finer (11/15). Both sides display frosty sun-gold luster, with hints of lilac and pale lavender also present. The strike is bold and the surface preservation is exceptional. The reverse is extensively cracked, as is typical of this variety, with peripheral cracks connecting UNITED STATES OF, and radial cracks extending through the olive leaves and along the left side of the O in DOL.

Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 572011, Base PCGS# 6240)
