Description

1865-S Ten, 865 Over Inverted 186, AU53
Unabraded and Eye-Appealing

1865-S $10 865 Over Inverted 186 AU53 NGC. Large S. To the novice this variety looks like 1865 over 981, but the latter digits are in reality an inverted 186 date logotype that the engraver first entered upside-down, then corrected. Both the Normal Date and Inverted Date varieties are condition rarities, understandably given the low mintage for both combined, 16,700 pieces. The Normal Date is actually a tad rarer but the curiosity factor of the blundered-date variety makes it popular, as does its separate Guide Book listing. This apricot-orange piece is surprisingly unabraded, but both moderate strike softness and light high-point wear are confined largely to the central devices. Excellent eye appeal. Census: 3 in 53, 5 finer (12/13).(Registry values: N4719)
