Description

1868 Aluminum Five Dollar
Judd-660, PR62

1868 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-660, Pollock-733, Low R.7, PR62 PCGS. Regular dies trial of the five dollar gold obverse and reverse. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. Cased sets were struck to demonstrate how easily aluminum could be used as a coining medium. Several of these sets are still in existence. About a half dozen pieces are believed extant. As with almost all aluminum patterns, this example shows noticeable contrast between the fields and devices. A few light hairlines and contact marks explain the grade.
