1906 $5 PR67 Cameo PCGS. From a reported mintage of just 85 pieces, the 1906 Liberty half eagle falls in the period between the U.S. Mint's shift to an all-around brilliant finish for proof coins (1902) and the more radical change to matte finishes that coincided with the replacement of the Gobrecht and Longacre Liberty Head designs during the Renaissance of American Coinage. Merely because a coin is post-1901, however, does not mean that it has no cameo effect to offer. While there are no Deep Cameo specimens of the 1906 half eagle in the PCGS Population Report, there are ten Cameo coins listed, compared to 50 non-Cameo pieces (11/13). NGC's Census Report has almost as many coins, though the numbers are near-even.

Of the Population Report coins, this piece stands alone at the top in the Cameo category, and among non-Cameo coins, PR66 is the highest grade assigned. Though NGC has graded several Superb Gems, the present specimen is the single finest certified by PCGS and thus is worthy of attention even beyond what a "typical" late-date classic gold proof would garner.

On first inspection, this specimen is noteworthy for its reflectivity and color, the deep mirrors sun-yellow with traces of orange. While the devices possess little frost in the pre-1902 sense and are themselves diffusely reflective in the broad, flat areas, there is nonetheless a plain sense of contrast, especially when the coin is tilted so the fields catch the light. A thin die crack connects stars 1 and 2, and another extends into the field from the highest point of star 2. A closer look reveals how impressively preserved the example is.
