Description

1859 Indian Cent in Copper-Nickel
Type of 1860, Judd-228, PR66

1859 1C Indian Cent, Judd-228, Pollock-272, R.1, PR66 PCGS. The transitional Pointed Bust Type of 1860 but dated 1859. The reverse displays the oak wreath and shield design first struck for circulation on 1860 cents, instead of the simpler laurel wreath reverse used on business strike 1859 cents. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge. Also struck in copper (and much scarcer as such), there is no doubt about the alloy of this piece as it retains much of the original tan-honey color these pieces showed when new. The fields are moderately reflective, certainly enough mirroring is present to distinguish this from a more commonly seen business strike variant of the same pattern design.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 11934, Greysheet# 12367)
