Description
1790 Standish Barry Threepence, VF25
W-8510, Rare Post-Colonial Silver Issue
1790 3PENCE Standish Barry Threepence VF25 NGC. Breen-1019,
W-8510, R.6. 12.8 gn. Like John Chalmers, Standish Barry of
Baltimore was a silversmith who produced his own coinage. In
Barry's case, the tokens consisted of a single denomination, a 1790
threepence. A portrait appearing on the obverse has led to
speculation that it was intended to be a likeness of Barry, or
perhaps George Washington.Another unanswered question involves the date appearing on the pieces: July 4, 1790. Whether the date simply reflects his patriotism, his involvement in a community celebration on that date, or some other event is unknown. Barry served in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812, as well as leading the Baltimore Independent Blues, a group instituted to protect Baltimore from the French after the Revolutionary War. In 1809, he directed a group consisting of silversmiths, jewelers, and watchmakers in the 4th of July celebration.
As mentioned in Arthur Crawmer's April 2000 article in The Numismatist, "Standish Barry and His Threepence," Barry was involved in a 1790 project led by David Evans, to whom he had been apprenticed, to build a town clock, the funds for which had been acquired via a lottery. Lotteries were a common means during the period to raise money for public works projects. Barry did not have a consistent career during his life, working in numerous fields before becoming a sheriff in his later years.
As of (3/14), NGC has certified only a single example of the rare Standish Barry threepence, and it is offered as the present lot. The medal-turn piece has golden-brown and steel-gray toning. The strike is even except for softness on the H in THREE, opposite the highest relief portion of the bust. The peripheral legends are strike doubled, especially noticeable on TOWN and 90. Abrasions are absent aside from faded thin marks beneath the T and R in THREE. Listed on page 75 of the 2014 Guide Book.
