Description
1856 Flying Eagle Cent, PR63
Very Rare Snow-1, Tilted ONE CENT
1856 1C PR63 PCGS. Snow-1. Early small cent specialist Rick
Snow believes that the very rare Snow-1 was the first variety
struck of the 1856 Flying Eagle cent. Evidence for this is that the
obverse die state precedes that of Snow-3, the prevalent variety
from that obverse die. The reverse is highly unusual: ONE CENT is
clearly tilted relative to the wreath, the only Flying Eagle cent
with this distinction. The dies are rotated, causing the eagle to
fly "onward and upward" relative to the reverse, as seen on certain
Gobrecht dollars. Rick Snow and Brian Wagner have compiled a roster
of all known specimens of Snow-1, a total of 12 pieces. Three of
those coins are currently lost. The present piece became known when
it was cherrypicked by Brian Wagner in 2004. It is fully struck and
minimally abraded with lovely walnut-brown and sky-blue toning. The
upper obverse field displays retained laminations, as made. An
opportunity to acquire the first of the first!Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 148710, Base PCGS# 2037, Greysheet# 340419)
