Description
1793 S-11b, B-16b Wreath Cent, AU53
Lettered Edge, Double Leaf
Tied for Third Finest Known
1793 1C Wreath Cent, Lettered Edge AU53 PCGS. S-11b, B-16b,
R.4. Ex: Holmes. Although the S-11a is rated slightly rarer,
the S-11b has a slightly lower average grade for the 12 finest
specimens. Those averages are VF36 for S-11a, VF34 for S-11b, and
XF47 for S-11c. In the Holmes catalog, Bob Grellman graded this
coin XF40 and tied for third finest known, and we agree with his
observation. Two different edge devices were used for the Lettered Edge cent planchets. The S-11b has a double leaf following DOLLAR and the S-11c has a single leaf after DOLLAR. The single leaf style continued on the Liberty Cap cents, and that is why S-11c is placed last in the emission sequence of the Wreath cents. In reality, the Lettered Edge planchets were mixed together and the S-11b and S-11c cents were struck simultaneously, explaining the mixture of die states found on these cents.
This example was discovered in England after the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia and the Noyes color book were published and for that reason does not appear in the published census lists. Lovely medium olive surfaces are mottled with darker steel-brown splashes. Minor surface marks on each side include some handling marks and other planchet marks from before this piece was minted, still visible due to central strike weakness. Our EAC grade XF40.
