Description

1857-O Double Eagle, Semiprooflike AU58

1857-O $20 AU58 NGC. The 1857-O is a very scarce double eagle from the New Orleans Mint. It has been overshadowed for many years by the towering rarity of the 1854-O and 1856-O, but the 1857-O is a significant rarity in its own right as well. Only 30,000 pieces were produced, and most examples seen today are VF or XF. The present AU58 coin has bright semiprooflike fields, and the strike details are above-average. As one would expect from a coin that has been lightly circulated, the surfaces display a number of small abrasions. However, the only one that is of singular note and could be used as a pedigree identifier is a vertical mark in the lower-right obverse field left of star 12. Census: 24 in 58, 4 finer (11/13).
Baltimore Signature (Heritage, 7/2003), lot 10579.
