Description

1847 Seated Liberty Half, PR63
Approximately 10 Survivors

1847 50C PR63 NGC. True proof examples of earlier coins are usually identified as such by a mere glance, and this is just such a coin. The fields are deeply mirrored around lustrous and sharply defined devices. Both sides have a blend of pleasing ivory, gold, and lilac color, with most of the toning on the obverse. A few faint hairlines on each side prevent an even higher grade determination for this splendid piece.

While we do not have an accurate Census of proof 1847 half dollars, we suspect that the population is less than 10 coins in all grades. NGC and PCGS have combined to grade 20 submissions in all grades, including resubmissions and crossovers, with the finest certified as PR66. Census: 4 in 63, 5 finer (6/13).
Ex: Charlotte National Money Show (Heritage, 3/2007), lot 827, where it realized $29,900.
