Description

1851-O Twenty, AU58
Nice Surfaces, Strong Appeal

1851-O $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. Substantial mint luster remains beneath satin-smooth surfaces of this near-Mint New Orleans twenty. The large mintage of 315,000 pieces makes this the most available O-Mint Liberty double eagle, yet few examples are as unbothered and attractive as this coin. A single, thin scrape starting near star 4 and into the left obverse field is the sole mark needing mention. Prooflike flash compliments red-orange highlights for added eye appeal. The high-point details are a bit soft from both strike and wear.

Based on the population reports, fewer AU58 coins of this issue exist than expected for the mintage. Doug Winter confirms, saying "It becomes quite scarce in AU58 and it is rare in any Uncirculated grade." This attractive coin is ideal for any high-grade circulated set or for type. Census: 61 in 58 (1 in 58+), 19 finer (6/14).
