Description

1857-D Quarter Eagle, Sharply Struck MS62
Scarce in All Grades
Ex: Duke's Creek Collection

1857-D $2 1/2 MS62 NGC. Variety 21-N. The only known variety. Ex: Duke's Creek Collection. The 1 and 7 in the date are equally spaced between the bust and the denticles. The mintmark is high and touches the branch stem. A die crack connects the lower right side of the O in OF to the left base of the F in OF. As the low mintage of only 2,364 pieces would suggest, the 1857-D quarter eagle is very scarce in all grades. NGC and PCGS have graded fewer than 130 examples, concentrated in the About Uncirculated grade range, and 29 pieces in mint condition, none finer than MS63.

The orange-gold surfaces of this MS62 specimen are imbued with hints of reddish-rose and the design elements are sharply struck, in fact better struck than the other issues from this decade (per Winter, 2013). Only the eagle's neck, legs, and right (facing) claw are a tad soft. The scattered, minute marks do not detract in the least. Indeed, they are fewer than what might be expected for an MS62. Census: 4 in 62 (1 in 62+), 1 finer (3/14).
