Description

1857-S Double Eagle, MS65
Lustrous and Sharply Struck

1857-S $20 MS65 NGC. CAC. The 1857-S double eagle records a production of more than 970,000 pieces, and NGC and PCGS have graded more than 7,000 examples, ranging from Very Fine to the better levels of Mint State, with the highest concentration in the Choice Extremely Fine to near-Gem range. Most of the pieces in mint condition came from the hoard of 1857-S twenties recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Central America in the late-1980s.

Whether or not the Gem in this lot was part of the above hoard is conjectural, but no designation is given on the NGC holder. In any event, its yellow-gold lustrous surfaces are fringed with whispers of orange at the margins. The design features are sharply struck throughout, a major attribute of this issue. Small contact marks and grazes on the obverse are the only factors that may well preclude an even finer grade.
