Description
1880-S Double Eagle, MS63
Incredibly Rare This Fine
1880-S $20 MS63 NGC. Mint State examples of the 1880-S
double eagle are somewhat available in MS62 and lower grades, but
they become decidedly rare at the MS63 level and finer. Since our
Permanent Auction Archives began in 1993, we have handled an 1880-S
in MS63 on only five prior occasions, and we have seen a
higher-grade piece on seven. This low rate of auction appearances
harmonizes with the small certified population in these grades. NGC
and PCGS combined report only 24 coins in MS63 and 10 finer,
including any unknown duplications. This honey-gold Select example displays bold definition and vibrant mint luster. Scattered small abrasions are as expected for the grade and nothing more. Census: 9 in 63, 3 finer (12/24).(Registry values: N4719)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 26BB, PCGS# 8993, Greysheet# 9933)
Weight: 33.44 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
