Description
1854 50C Liberty Octagonal 50 Cents, BG-306, R.4, MS64 PCGS. Ex: Jack Totheroh Collection. Breen Gillio Die State II. BG-306 is the sole Frontier, Deviercy & Co. octagonal half variety with FD initials on the reverse. Most survivors are Die State I, with a bold date and minimal rust. The dies were then set aside. They developed rust, but were lapped and returned to service, striking the very scarce Die State II pieces. The present near-Gem has a faint, fragmented date and several patches of die rust. The evenly struck butter-gold surfaces are attractive despite a couple of minor retained laminations on the upper obverse. Population: 13 in 64, 8 finer (3/18).Ex: Jack Totheroh Collection (Holabird-Kagin, 4/2013), lot 189, which realized $1,175.
