1863 Aluminum Postage Currency Pattern
Judd-328B, PR66
8-Grain Planchet / Plain Edge

1863 10C Ten Cents, Judd-328B, Pollock-397, Cassel-8, High R.6, PR66 PCGS. 8.2 grains. The standard Postage Currency obverse and reverse designs are present on each side. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. The SEM-EDX testing by S&N Labs on certificate number 80487.66/4624173 revealed the composition to be: 94.5% aluminum, 4.2% silicon, and 1.3% iron. The aluminum strikings of the Postage Currency patterns are found in two weight classes: 8.2 grains and 11 grains. The 328B designation is explained by PCGS' attribution of Judd-327 pieces as pure aluminum on an 11-grain planchet. Judd-328 is an alloyed aluminum eight-grain planchet with a reeded edge; therefore, Judd-328B was the PCGS choice for an alloyed 8-grain striking with a plain edge. The surfaces are remarkably preserved. There are a couple of minor planchet laminations, a common occurrence on early aluminum patterns. Otherwise, the surfaces are bright and essentially "as struck." The iron /silicon addition to the aluminum alloy appears to have been remarkably effective. We would be interested to find out if other later-dated aluminum patterns also used this as part of the aluminum alloy, or was the discovery of the combination of the strengthening property of iron and the preservation of surfaces of silicon lost on Mint personnel at the height of the Civil War?
